Magnetoelasticity and Magnetoresistance in Cu–Al–Mn Shape-Memory Alloys

چکیده
This paper is aimed at studying the effect of a magnetic field on the martensitic transition of a Cu–Al–Mn shape-memory alloy. The martensitic transition has been studied through resistance measurements under applied magnetic fields ranging from 0 to 50 kOe. Negative magnetoresistance showing an almost linear dependence with the square of the magnetization has been observed. This magnetoresistive effect is associated with the existence of small ferromagnetic Mn-clusters. Its strength and thermal dependence is different in both phases. The martensitic transition temperature is slightly increased and its spread in temperature significantly reduced upon increasing the field. These results show the existence of magnetoelastic coupling, which favors the nucleation of those martensitic variants with the easy magnetization axis aligned with the field.

Shape memory alloys are typical temperature-sensitive metallic functional materials due to superelasticity and shape recovery characteristics. The conventional shape memory effect involves the formation and deformation of thermally induced martensite and its reverse transformation. The shape recovery process usually takes place over a temperature range, showing relatively low temperature-sensit...

Two Cu-Mn-Al samples of different compositions were studied: one exhibiting martensitic transformation, another without structural transition. X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements demonstrate that different magnetic behaviors of alloys originate from different concentrations and sizes of ferromagnetic nanoparticles, which appear after solid solution decomposition.Estimation of magnetic m...
متن کاملMagnetic field induced entropy change and magnetoelasticity in Ni-Mn-Ga alloys
The magnetocaloric effect that originates from the martensitic transition in the ferromagnetic Ni-Mn-Ga shape-memory alloy is studied. We show that this effect is controlled by the magnetostructural coupling at both the martensitic variant and magnetic domain length scales. A large entropy change induced by moderate magnetic fields is obtained for alloys in which the magnetic moment of the two ...
متن کاملPositron Dopplerbroadening Measurements in Cu-Al-Ni Based Shape Memory Alloys
Positron annihilation Dopplerbroadening measurements were carried out on Cu-Al-Ni based alloys to which Ti, and Ti and Mn was added. The measurements reveal a drastic effect in the S-parameter behavior when the defects anneal out at the transition from martensite to the beta phase. When crossing the transition region several times, an increase of the S-parameter value is observed. This is inter...
متن کاملShape Memory Properties in Cu-Zn-Al Alloy
In this research a Cu-Zn-Al alloy is produced by melting the raw materials in an electric resistance furnace and then pouring it into a steel mould. The optimum way to achieve the final analysis in the hypo-eutectoid range is determined and the influence of the alloying element, Ti on the grain size and the shape memory properties of the samples are investigated. Solution treatment (done at 850...
